Generation Gap

Without any hesitation we murmur a phrase in front of our parents “You don’t understand me”. Is this a correct definition of Generation Gap? Do you think so?

While sitting at my seat in my office and listening to my colleague's non-senses, I noticed that time and again he was repeating some lines. Those lines were, “I am planning a vacation trip to Kashmir” and “My Grandmother is not feeling well and my dad is forcing me to take her to Doctor (in Calcutta)”. To my utter shock those were not simple lines, he was telling his problems.

He was planning a vacation trip to Kashmir. He told me that he has planned a 6 Days/5 Nights trip and he has booked some exotic hotel in Pahalgam. The whole trip was costing him around 50k to 60k. He was happy and was apprising everyone in the team. Suddenly he got a phone call from his dad and his loud harp sound turned to mourning expression. Courtesy I asked him – What has happened? And those were my last words because by then he started shouting at his dad and his grandmother.

Actually his grandmother was suffering from Cataract and required an emergency treatment, precisely an emergency operation. He had to take his grandmother all the way from Kolkata to Mumbai. So I evaluated that he would have to suspend his trip to Kashmir and make a new trip from Delhi to Kolkata continuing till Mumbai which would be costing him 25k to 30k. I completely forgot to tell you that he was really upset not because his grandmother was suffering from cataract but something else.

Here I want to stop writing and look for answers – Is it really expensive paying an amount of money for Grandmother’s operation? Is it really expensive to side-line our other engagements and spend some time with our elders. Is it really expensive to help our elders when they really need us?

I think our thinking is the Origin of terminology Generation-Gap. This is wrong – We have spawned this terminology and we are accusing our parents for this fallacy. Our parents have never said or shared any such thought. We are creating gaps in relationship with our parents. Let's STOP this by following three Easy STEPS:

  • By Frisking Out
  • Spending time
  • Helping them when they really need us.
I think this is the correct time to change our thinking, fall in love with and thanks the Almighty for blessing us with such a respectable and precious gift – Our Parents
